Doppelgangers - Chapter 7 by ~moontsunami:iconmoontsunami:

Rose and Donna made their way to town, but not moving with the regular pace. They were still visibly shaken by what they had just seen. Neither of them spoke, but clutched viciously to each other’s hands. Donna’s nails were actually biting into Rose’s flesh, but she said nothing. The pain was a mere blip in her mind compared to what else was going through it. Finding the Chancellor’s office, they informed him of what they had found. He gathered a troop of five men to follow the women to the scene. It was a silent trip back.

The Doctor had been in a manic state since the women’s departure. After reaching the TARDIS, he was a flash of motion, grabbing these bits here, those odds and ends there, and piling them all up in front of the doors of the TARDIS. He then grabbed a small backpack and shoved it all in. Once it was all securely in place, he threw it over his right shoulder and looped a safety-cone looking object around the other. Sprinting back out of the TARDIS, the Doctor’s mind was working hard, the cogs turning on high gear, and he was not able to focus on the irony of the situation.

Donna and Rose had shown the men back to the cabin, but refused to go back to the scene. Rose just paced in front of cabin, biting her thumbnail, and Donna had shrunk down the side of the cabin. She was now sitting with her knees next to her face, and she hugged her legs tight to her body. The feeling of wrongness still permeated the air, and it made the women even more anxious without the Doctor’s presence. Donna rested her head on her knees and tried to block all images from her brain that kept creeping slowly into her mind’s eye. She knew that what she had seen wasn’t the Doctor, but all she could imagine was the corpse with a pinstripe suit and plimsoles. Rose’s mind was also treading dangerously in that territory. They both cared deeply about the man, maybe not in the same way, but still their worry was palpable.

The Doctor ran strait into the women, almost taking Rose out as he put the brakes on, skidding on his heels.

“Ok, let’s go!” He motioned at Donna to get off the ground.

All the women could see when they looked at him was a frenzy of movement. The Doctor went sprinting behind the house; Donna quickly got off her feet, and, with Rose, followed the Doctor. When the group reached the place of the suicide, the men had already gotten the body down and covered it with a sheet. They were just getting ready to take it away.

“Wait, just leave that here. We might need him.” The Doctor said to the men who were getting ready to cart it off. Shrugging, the men moved away and settled against some nearby trees, just waiting for when they were needed.

The Doctor sloughed off his bag and the ring of cones, and immediately began going through the bag. Item were flying everywhere. Donna and Rose eyed him cautiously, and Rose instantly noticed the cones.

“Those aren’t from when the Cybermen appeared, are they?” Her voice was filled with a sadness the Doctor had not heard for quite a long time.

He looked back at her with concern. “Yeah.” He stopped fiddling with the bag and rubbed the back of his sore head. “I didn’t really notice until now. Kind of kismet that we are using it today, isn’t it?” He tired to put some mirth behind his words, but it stung him as much as it did Rose.

“Hopefully today will turn out a little better than it did last time.” Rose said, trying to quip back at him.

“Oh, yes!” The Doctor said, trying to turn on that million watt smile.

Donna just looked back and forth at the two of them, almost completely lost. The Doctor had said some things about his loss of Rose, but she never got the full story. Their little moment, with the inside references, was filled with emotions not lost on Donna. She was hopeful for the two, even in the dire situation they were in.

The Doctor had turned back to his contraptions he had strewed all over the forest floor, sticking this plug in that, crossing one wire with another, and soldered them together with his screwdriver. After a few moments, he had a small box with switches, dials, and a microphone attached to the safety cone device.

“Ok, who you gonna call?” The Doctor said with a smile turning back to the women, hoping they would get the reference.

Donna shook her head, but Rose hummed a bit of the tune from the movie.

“That’s a girl, just like old times. Now I used these cones before to triangulate the source of the Ghosts in Canary Warf. since I know where they are based now, I am going to use these to trap the specters in one spot in order to talk to them. It will allow us to freely communicate with them without them being able to harm us.”

He began to fiddle with the device, tuning the dials like a radio. “Just have to be able to pick up on their residual energy waves. They appear to the locals whenever they feel like it, but with this,” he held up the box and waved it like a little boy proud of his new toy, “we will be able to make them come to us. I just have to be able to find that frequency.”

“Ok Egon, let’s bust ’um.” Donna said finally going along with the joke that seemed to be running between Rose and the Doctor.

The Doctor stopped fiddling with the device for a moment to look at Donna. “I always thought of myself more as Venkman, than Egon…” He trailed off as Donna gave him a stern look. “Ok, ok. I won’t argue. Anyways… I will have them here in a minute. I think you two might want to brace yourselves. You have to remember that they are not us. They might look like us, maybe even sound like us, but they are different people in every other way. You have to remember that.” Both Rose and Donna nodded. The light mood that had just recently came about with the Ghostbuster talk now faded away as the women prepared themselves to face their doppelgangers.

They didn’t have to wait long. Within moments the Doctor had dialed in the specters. Three figures began to wavier in and out in front of them, like static figures on a television set that had gone wonky. The Doctor flicked a few of the switches and the three people appeared solidly, as if they were alive. Standing up, the Doctor, along with Rose and Donna, looked into their own doppelgangers’ faces. It was almost a mirror image, except with one difference: Badona was holding a baby in her arms. Also the specters didn’t look too happy to be looking at their own faces.

The Doctor raised one hand in a friendly gesture. “Hello there! Just phoning in for a chat. I hope you don’t mind.”
